VocNote (“the app”, “we”, “us”) is a vocabulary notebook for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Android. This policy explains what data the app handles, why, and the choices you have. We designed VocNote to keep your notebook on your device by default and to collect as little as possible.
The words, meanings, notes, examples and other content you add stay on your device. They are uploaded to our cloud only if you create a VocNote Cloud account, sign in, and turn on cloud sync (a Premium feature). If you never sign in, none of your vocabulary content leaves your device through us. You can export and import your data yourself at any time (JSON/CSV).
If you choose to use VocNote Cloud, we create an account using Firebase Authentication (by Google). You can sign up with an email and password, Sign in with Apple or Sign in with Google. We store your email address, an optional display name, an optional profile photo, and a unique account identifier so you can sign in and sync across your devices. If you use Sign in with Apple with “Hide My Email”, we only receive Apple’s relay address. Using an account is entirely optional — the app is fully usable without one.
When cloud sync is enabled, your vocabulary content and learning progress are stored in Firebase Cloud Firestore so they can sync between your devices. This data is tied to your account and is not shared with other users. Your profile photo, if you add one, is stored in Firebase Cloud Storage.
Each of these is off until you use it, and each sends only what is described:
drive.appdata permission, which cannot see any of your other
files). We do not receive a copy.Apple Intelligence suggestions, pronunciation and handwriting practice run on your device; nothing you type into them is sent to us. Some content (such as Chinese stroke-order data) is downloaded from a public content network, which, like any website, sees your IP address.
We use Firebase Analytics (by Google) to understand how the app is used (for example, which features are opened) so we can improve it. This analytics data includes app-interaction events, general device and OS information, and a pseudonymous identifier. It does not include the content of your notebook (your words, meanings or notes are never sent as analytics). Advertising identifiers (IDFA) are not used, and we do not use this data to track you across other companies’ apps or websites.
Crash reporting via Firebase Crashlytics (by Google) is turned off by default. It only runs if you enable it in Settings › Diagnostics. When enabled, it collects crash logs and diagnostic information (such as the state of the app at the time of a crash and device information) to help us fix problems. You can turn it off again at any time.
The free version of VocNote shows ads through Google AdMob. We request non-personalized ads only. AdMob may process device information and an advertising identifier to serve ads, cap how often you see them, and prevent fraud, but we do not use them to build an advertising profile of you or to track you across other apps, and the app does not show the App Tracking Transparency prompt. Ad attribution is handled through Apple’s privacy-preserving SKAdNetwork. Buying VocNote Premium removes all ads.
Purchases of VocNote Premium are processed by Apple (App Store) or Google (Google Play). Payment is handled entirely by them — we never receive your card or payment details. We use RevenueCat to manage entitlements and to let you restore your purchase. RevenueCat processes your purchase status, a purchase/customer identifier, device information, and — if you are signed in to VocNote Cloud — your account identifier and email, so your purchase can be linked to your account and restored on your devices.
We use Firebase App Check (Apple DeviceCheck / Google Play Integrity) to confirm requests come from a genuine copy of the app, and Firebase Remote Config to tell you when an update is required. These process device and app information, not your notebook.
We publish short videos about English words to VocNote’s own accounts on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. To do this, our publishing tool connects to those platforms with our own account’s permission (for example, a Facebook Page access token) and only uploads videos we made. It does not read, collect or store any information about people who watch, like, comment on or follow those accounts. What you do on those platforms is covered by their own privacy policies.
The services above are provided by third parties who process data on our behalf. Their own privacy policies apply:
We do not sell your personal data. We do not share your data with anyone except the service providers listed above, strictly to operate the app, or where required by law.
VocNote is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
We rely on the security measures of the service providers above. Because those providers (Google, RevenueCat, Apple) operate globally, data may be processed on servers outside your country.
We may update this policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top reflects the latest version.
